Simple Mounting of Gears and Pulleys
For these applications Tolerance Rings offer a simple solution
for fixing components that need to drive a torque without
requiring expensive features, such as keyways or threaded
holes and fasteners. A Tolerance Ring is also an excellent
replacement for glue as it is clean, does not require
expensive assembly plant and the fixing is not affected by
differential thermal expansion, temperature or humidity.

Bearing Mounting in Transmission Module
In this example Tolerance Rings are used to mount
transmission component bearings in a plastic housing. The
Tolerance Rings allow for misalignment in the moulding
process and thermal expansion of the housing, enabling the
gears to mesh correctly and provide high levels of reliability.

Fixing Clutch Assembly in Plastic Housing
In this application the clutch assembly has a thin walled
housing. This assembly has to be securely retained into a
plastic outer housing. The Tolerance Ring is used, as it
compensates for the differential thermal expansion without
requiring a high installation force that could damage the clutch
assembly housing. In addition the use of the Tolerance Ring
means that the outer housing can be used ‘as moulded’ and
avoids additional machining operations.

Tolerance Rings are radial spring fasteners
that are press fitted between two mating components. This generates a retention force that fixes those components together, whilst also satisfying other functional requirements such as Torque Drive, Overload Protection, NVH Performance and Differential Thermal Expansion.

Fasten annular components
Reduce noise & vibration
Compensating for thermal expansion
Predictable & repeatable slip
Avoid resonance frequencies
Overload protection
